Programs Assistant / Driver

Shalom Farms is a nonprofit, food justice organization that seeks to build healthy communities by growing and sharing healthy food. On our two Certified Naturally Grown farms we work with thousands of volunteers from all backgrounds each year to produce more than 200,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables, which we distribute throughout the Richmond, VA, metro region through a variety of programs and partnerships.

We are seeking a Programs Assistant / Driver to help our Programs team in a variety of capacities related to ensuring access to healthy food across Richmond. This position is an integral part of the Programs team and reports to the Director of Programs.

About the Position

The Programs Assistant will assist with various parts of produce transportation, packing and prep at multiple sites, delivery, and program implementation. This is a part-time, seasonal position that runs May through mid-November, paying $16.00-$17.25/hour commensurate with experience. Some flexibility in hours may be possible with agreed-upon hours fluctuating between 15-20 hours/week.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Pick up produce from our Powhatan Farm and drop off at our Northside Farm
  • Make deliveries to Healthy Retail stores
  • Wash, sort, and pack produce
  • Assist with Mobile Market truck packing and organizing
  • Prepare materials and ingredients for recipe sampling at Mobile Market
  • Offer samples, taste tests, and demos at Mobile Market
  • Assist with cooking classes and tabling at community events
Secondary Responsibilities (as assigned)
  • Provide administrative support for programs
  • Assist with annual Mobile Market data and customer surveys
  • Perform other programs and farm work as needed and requested
  • Able to regularly and repeatedly lift 40 pounds
  • Flexible, creative, solutions-oriented, invested and shows initiative
  • Positive attitude, willing and able to work independently and within a team environment
  • Perform well in diverse work settings and with varying levels and styles of supervision
  • A valid driver’s license and clean driving record are required for insurance purposes, as the capability to  drive a cargo van (with training provided) is a component of the job duties
  • Our ideal candidate has experience working or volunteering in diverse community-based settings
Compensation and Hours

This is a part-time, seasonal position that runs May through mid-November, paying $16.00-$17.25/hour commensurate with experience.; prorated paid holidays, prorated annual leave, and lots of farm produce
