Director of Development

The Opportunity

The next Director of Development for Shalom Farms will lead all aspects of our fund development and marketing efforts to raise over $1million a year.  This position will lead a wide range of donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.  The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director, serves as liaison with the Board of Directors, and supervises the Development Operations Manager.

About Shalom Farms

Shalom Farms is a nonprofit, food justice organization that seeks to build healthy communities by growing and sharing healthy food.  On our two Certified Naturally Grown farms we work with thousands of volunteers from all backgrounds each year to produce more than 200,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables, which we distribute throughout the Richmond, VA metro region through a variety of programs and partnerships.

The Position

Primary Responsibilities

  • Create and lead the implementation of a multi-faceted development plan to raise $1M+ from diverse funding sources to support annual operations.  The development plan will address strategies for raising funds from individuals, foundations, corporations, the faith community, and government sources.
  • Foster deep and genuine relationships with our supporters through effective cultivation, solicitations, and stewardship strategies.
  • Lead all annual fund efforts with an emphasis on growing revenue through major gifts, online fundraising, mailed appeals, and recurring gifts.
  • Provide oversight for our two annual signature events.
  • Supervise the creation of all digital and print marketing collateral ensuring that it reflects our brand and coveys the impact of our work through ethical storytelling.
  • Serve on on the organization’s leadership team and help strengthen the culture of philanthropy across the organization.  As appropriate, work collaboratively with the Directors of Finance, Farming Operations, and Programs.
  • Serve as a liaison with the Board of Directors to ensure the entire board is meaningfully engaged in philanthropic initiatives.  Work closely with the Fund Development Committee Chair to lead monthly Fund Development Committee meetings.
  • Supervise a full-time Development Operations Manager responsible for fundraising administration, grant writing, event coordination, social media, and marketing efforts.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain, track, and meet a variety of deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to authentically communicate with humility across lines of difference, particularly racial, ethnic, and economic.
  • 5+ years of fundraising experience, with increasing responsibility.
  • CFRE preferred.
  • Experience with community-centric philanthropy.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.
  • Proficiency with donor databases.
  • Significant experience directly and independently soliciting, closing, and stewarding major gifts.
  • A valid driver’s license and clean driving record are required for insurance purposes, as the ability and willingness to travel among various farms and office locations are components of the job duties.

Compensation

Minimum starting salary $75,000/year, generous employer-paid health coverage of a high-quality zero or low-deductible plan, generous PTO, and SIMPLE IRA matching after 6 months.
