We are excited to announce that Shalom Farms has launched a second farm site, centrally located in Richmond’s Northside on property belonging to Union Seminary. Like our Powhatan site, the “Westwood site” will produce hundreds of thousands of servings of fruits and vegetables with the support of thousands of annual volunteers. Produce grown here will be distributed throughout Shalom Farms programs, as well as to partner community-based organizations, including food banks, after-school programs, and community kitchens.
While the farm will maintain a focus on productivity, the highly accessible location and scale of the site will allow for innovative collaborations with new and existing partners ranging from Richmond Public Schools to Union Seminary. With 5 virgin acres and the ability for in-ground production, the farm will be the largest operation of its kind within the city, and one of the largest in the region.
2018 at the Westwood site will be about planting and planning. With a Westwood Site Farm Manager just recently hired, we will be able to grow on one acre of the property while we develop the full site plan and listen to program participants and community partners about the best ways to leverage this incredibly unique farm project for maximum community impact.
